A talk about AI and Australia(centric)

This page has everything from the talk: the slides, the one rule worth remembering, and every source I used, so you can check my claims for yourself. (That's the pub test in action.)

The talk in a nutshell

The Ugly. A voice can now be cloned for about $100 from 90 seconds of audio the ABC did it to Senator Jacqui Lambie (with her permission) and fooled her own colleagues. Australians over 65 lost $88.8 million to scams in 2025,  over a quarter of all reported losses. Meanwhile “free” tools quietly collect our data, and essential services keep replacing people with chatbots.

The Bad. Seventy years of muddling along, then a sprint ” ChatGPT reached 100 million users in two months, and our laws are still jogging to catch up. The divide is real: not everyone is online, routine brain-work is being automated mid-career, and AI trained on an unfair past repeats that unfairness at speed.

The Good. AI is a super-librarian, not a brain, it retrieves, you decide. Machine speed plus human judgment is saving sight in London, catching shed-sized bushfires from space, and arriving in Australian clinics. It's fixing bank code, stocking supermarket shelves, mapping earthquake damage and it built most of my websites. Used well, it protects the things we value most: independence, fairness, community.

The punchline. It was never AI versus humans. Technology is a tool, but you are the defining master.

Staying safe: the toolkit

  • Stay curious — the confident user is harder to fool than the fearful one. Try new tools in safe settings, with a helper beside you.
  • Urgent + secret = scam — hang up, call back on the number you know.
  • Guard your keys — no password, PIN or code to anyone who rings you. No bank, no “grandchild”, no “Tax Office”. Never, ever.
  • Ask for help — there's a helper in every family and every village.

Where to get help

  • Scamwatch — report a scam and read current warnings (National Anti-Scam Centre).
  • IDCARE — free support if your identity or accounts have been compromised (1800 595 160).
  • Be Connected — free, gentle online courses for over-50s, including AI and scam awareness
